Some Things You Should Know About Contributing To A Political Campaign

1. The maximum contribution per individual per election is $2300. For 2008 there are two elections, a primary and a general. An individual may give $2300 before the January primary and $2300 after the primary.

2. Contributions to political campaigns are NOT tax deductible.

3. Contributions of money may be made by check, credit card or other written instrument, including money orders.

4. Cash contributions may not exceed $100 per individual for the entire campaign period.

5. For individuals who contribute by check on a joint checking account, the person who signs the check will be reported as the contributor. Joint contributions are permitted only if both parties sign the check.

6. The FEC requires that each contributor provide the campaign with their name and mailing address. Individuals who contribute $200 or more during an election cycle are also required to provide their occupation and employer. The employer's address is not required. Retired individuals who give $200 or more should state their occupation when they retired.

7. The personal information provided to the campaign must be reported to the FEC each quarter. Once received by the FEC, this information is considered to be part of the public record. Personal information WILL NOT be shared with any other organization.

8. An individual may designate a specific use for their contribution. This may include, but is not limited to, things such as yard signs, phone banking expenses, TV/radio ads, campaign literature, campaign buttons, etc.

9. Contributions may also consist of in-kind contributions. An in-kind contribution is providing the campaign with goods or services in lieu of money. In-kind contributions carry the same maximum limit as monetary contributions

Federal law prohibits contributions to the campaign from corporations, labor organizations and national banks; from any person contributing another person's funds; from foreign nationals who lack permanent resident status; from federal government contractors; and from individuals under age 18. By clicking the contribute button, you affirm that your contribution is from personal funds and not from funds otherwise prohibited under law. To comply with federal law, we must use best efforts to obtain, maintain and submit the name, mailing address, occupation and name of employer for individuals whose contributions exceed $200 per election cycle.
