Tuesday, August 26th is Primary Election Day!
Monday, August 25 2008 @ 04:03AM
Thank you to all those who have emailed, passed out business cards, made phone calls, waved signs, knocked on doors, contributed, attended events, held house parties and given encouragement and support during the past few months of the campaign.
The big day is Tuesday, and if you've got a couple of hours to greet voters at a precinct, call Mike at 320 4502 and he'll give you details.
After the polls close at 7:00, we'll be gathering at the Bohemia Cafe, 937 Central Avenue in St. Petersburg for election returns. The first cup of java or tea will be on us and there will be plenty of time for conversation.
In retrospect . . . .
It's not been easy for any of us to watch our nation being mired in debt, war and moral decline. Increasing prices, stagnant wages and a devalued dollar affect the majority of Americans. Veterans are denied their claims, seniors struggle on fixed incomes. Families face foreclosure due to predatory lending practices and Wall Street is bailed out by our tax dollars. Something is wrong with this picture.
32% of Florida's children struggle with obesity, which can lead to diabetes and heart disease. In fact, these children may be the first generation that do not live longer than their parents. Something is terribly wrong with this picture.
College students are tens of thousands of dollars in debt, but where are the jobs? High school drop out rates grow, and so does the privatized prison population. Corporations like Raytheon can contaminate their surrounding area and not tell homeowners. Lawful claims for Pinellas County Nuclear Workers are denied.
We can do better.
Millions of Americans understand the seriousness of the times, and are ready to take back their country for "we the people."
"We the people" demand accountability, honesty, and straight talk on the serious issues we face and the sacrifices we may need to make. As our economy may continue to decline, I encourage folks to reduce debt, support local businesses, use alternative transportation, create food banks and develop a system of barter and exchange for goods and services.
On a national scale, we need leadership that understands our desperate need for revolutionary change in energy, health care, trade, taxation, banking practices and foreign policy. We need leaders who are not dependent upon lobbying dollars, or ideological persuasion to make voting decisions. We need leaders who can critically think, who have a heart of compassion and who are not afraid to make tough choices.
Our campaign has always been about "we the people", not about money or political status quo. It has been an honor to be a "voice" for change. Regardless of the election results, sharing, educating and seeking the truth is always a "win."
Thanks from the bottom of my heart to those who have taken part.
I'll see you Tuesday night!
